The word stewardship is no longer commonly used, so the meaning may have escaped some of us. The dictionary says that a steward is one who manages another person’s property, finances or other affairs. Stewardship is then the practice of being a steward.
If we acknowledge that God is the maker and owner of all creation, then we are the stewards to manage all of the many gifts He has provided for our use and pleasure. What then does God expect of us in return besides our love? The Old Testament was pretty clear that a return of a tithe, ten percent of your earnings, was the normally expected offering. In the New Testament Jesus does not reject that, but he seems to be more tolerant. He expects us to use all of the gifts wisely, not foolishly, and then joyfully return a generous portion in a loving and faithful manner.
Wesley United Methodist Church will practice faithful stewardship in the wise and responsibly way it uses your offerings to fulfill its church wide obligations.
When you become a member of the United Methodist Church, you take a pledge to serve the church with your time, talents, gifts, service, prayer and witness. This does not mean you can pick and choose the ones you want to do and disregard the rest. You should honor each one to the best of your ability and feel the joy of working with God and His Wesley family. It has been our experience and recommendation that you pray and ask God, “what do You want me to do”. We are confident that you will get some answers for guidance.
